Warmer weather means green thumbs get busy. With the COVID-19 restrictions, Nawalakw pivoted to help the community stay healthy, positive and uplifted during these unsettling times. Since April, a crew including Stephen Alfred, Jonah Johnson, Keith Dawson, Dallas Nelson and Jakob Dawson have built 120 garden boxes for members in the community of Alert Bay, including the Whe-la-la-U. The project involves building the garden boxes, filling them with fertile soil, delivering and planting the seeds, fruits and veggies starts, and continuing upkeep. The garden project has inspired other community members to get out in their own yards and become self-sufficient gardeners.
The project was made possible with generous donations from the following organizations:
- The Annual Foundation
- Abernathy – sea soil
