In each edition of the Nawalakw News, we will introduce you to a member of our team. This edition features Jonah Johnson, who joined the team in April 2020 to help with the garden box project.

What is your role with the project?

J.J. Building the garden boxes so all the elders can have them. We started out building at K’odi’s place and then we would deliver them once completed.
We also sifted soil and delivered it. In total we built 120 boxes.

How did you get involved in the project?

J.J. Kodi gave me a call, he had heard I was a good worker. He was looking for someone from the Nation and I was glad to help.

What was your favourite part of the project?

J.J. My last day, we went out to Bond Sound clearing trails for the blessing. It was weird, I felt like I had been there before. We went to check out the river and check out the site. We were able to see K’odi’s vision while we were there. We spent the whole day in Bond Sound clearing trails, making it easier for elders, clearing trails to make pathways clear for them to walk.

What are you currently reading/watching/thinking about?

J.J. Read a lot of Disney books with my daughter Alora, and also enjoy Fresh Prince of Bel Air marathons on Netflix.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

J.J. Spending time with my daughter Alora, having my freedom with my daughter, gaming, watching tv. I would like to have the freedom to leave the Island but I think it’s best to wait.
